Our History
In 1983, The Northeastern Regional Police Department (NERPD) was formed by
the merger of the East Manchester Township and Mount Wolf Borough Police
Departments. The new agency started its tour of duty on January 1, 1983.
In July of 1983, Manchester Borough then joined the police department. In
the beginning, the department consisted of five (5) officers with an
operating budget of just over $140,000.00. It served a combined population
of approximately 7100. As the communities it served grew, so did the
police department. Over the past 25 years, The police force has increased
to eleven (11) officers with an operating budget of approximately $1.4
million.
The Department now serves an estimated population of 11,000.
In 1983, the department answered 1,313 calls for service. In 2007, the department answered over 4500 calls. The Northeastern Regional Police moved into their current headquarters in
2001. The property for the new station, was acquired from the Pennsylvania
Power and Light Company. Prior to moving into the police station, the NERPD
was headquartered in the East Manchester Township Municipal Building. The
police station has state of the art security features and contains an
"in-house" forensic lab for Officers to process evidence or prepare evidence
for submission to a Crime Lab. The police station also provides a meeting
room for the Northeastern Regional Police Commission. In addition, this
meeting room is used for other purposes, like police officer training and
for the Youth Aid Panel (an alternative form of punishment for first
offender juveniles).
The current departmental make-up consists of a Chief, a Lieutenant, a
Sergeant, a Detective, and seven Patrolmen. Within the department, officers
are trained and or certified in a myriad of specialties to include: Accident
Reconstruction, Criminal Investigation, Crime Scene Investigation,
Polygraph, Narcotics Investigation, Hostage Negotiation, Firearms
Instruction, Drug Recognition Expert and Bike Patrol. In addition to these specialties, the
department also offers programs to the community such as DARE, Child Safety
Seat inspections and Public Speaking engagements. Officers of the NERPD are
actively involved in the York County Forensic Investigative Unit, York
County Quick Response Team (Hostage negotiation unit), and The York County
Drug Task Force as well as being active members of professional associations
which provide information/trainings to keep them up to date on the latest
techniques/trends in Police work.
The Northeastern Regional Police Department is a pro-active law enforcement
agency which strides to maintain current in police investigative techniques
and equipment. The officers in the department have access to various pieces
of equipment to include: Night Vision Binoculars, Preliminary Breath Tests
(PBT), handheld taser devices, Digital imaging systems and several types of
weaponry to include long rifles, shotguns and handguns. Police Officers are
trained in the proper use of each piece of equipment, prior to its use.
Each officer must demonstrate that they understand how to operate each item
and do so in a proficient manner.
